About

Sena Yang was born and raised in Seattle, WA and lived in New York City for over 15 years after graduating from The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) with a BFA in Apparel Design. Her love of fashion stemmed from watching her grandmother sew as a young child.

From the age of 18, Sena learned about craftsmanship through years of intensive Internships starting at the Seattle Opera House Costume Shop. This led her to the design studios of Alexander McQueen in London and Catherine Malandrino in New York City. Using her fine arts background she created artworks for embellishment, embroidery, and print design for major showpieces presented on the runways of New York and Paris.

Right out of school, she was a part of the original team that launched the successful Simply Vera by Vera Wang line for Kohl's and was quickly recruited by Contemporary Fashion label LaROK, being the youngest-ever Lead Designer on the team. Her designs were popular amongst the Hollywood set frequently being seen on The Hills, The Kardashians, Gossip Girl, Miley Cyrus, Gabrielle Union, Taylor Swift, and many more.

She launched her eponymous line Sena NYC in 2009, an instant retail favorite sold at exclusive shops like Kitson, Fred Segal, Revolve Clothing, Scoop NYC, Gregory's and Singer22 with a strong press presence with Cosmopolitan, Elle, Vogue Nippon, WWD, Nylon and InStyle. Celebrity clientele included Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Kourtney Kardashian, Kate Upton, Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Shakira, Johnny Weir, Evelyn Lozada and Katy Perry.

Staying ahead of the curve, in 2013 she founded Asteria Active, a luxury activewear line that had prominent press placement with 2 covers of Shape Magazine with Ellie Goulding and Gina Rodriguez with coverage in Vogue.com, Cosmopolitan, Self, Elle.com, The Coveteur, Refinery29, and Women’s Health. Stockists included Bandier, Carbon38 and Of A Kind.

Sena continues to work in Fashion through Design + Production Consulting, Private Label Brands, and Custom + Costume Work in the New York Metropolitan Area while being based in New Jersey. With a strong belief in the importance of Art & Design Education, since 2011 she has been leading Fashion Design workshops at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City for students aged 5-18. She also enjoys making kimchi and hanboks when there is time to spare.
